创作背景——
该曲旋律的灵感来自于PuffDaddy的梦。一日清晨，PuffDaddy醒来，脑海中残存了一段挥之不去的完整旋律，他立即走到钢琴前弹奏出来，并以录音机记录下来。PuffDaddy本以为该旋律来自于他人的作品，于是他花了几周的时间到处把旋律弹给朋友们听，还有FaithEvans。
问FaithEvans是否记得旋律的出处。在询问了音乐界人士后，FaithEvans确定了该旋律为自己原创，于是便着手填词，并以“炒蛋，噢，宝贝我爱煞你的腿”作为非正式歌词。
直到1983年5月，专辑《iwillbemissingyou》在英国伦敦开始录制，PuffDaddy才认真为该旋律配上歌词。第一句歌词“yesterday”出来后，他为该韵脚想出了第二句“allmytroublesseemedsofaraway”；他还需要另一个三个音节的词，于是就有了“suddenly”。
